In-Depth Trauma Therapy

When they affect individuals deeply enough, traumatic events of the past can hold sway over the present. At North Bay Recovery Center, we come to the aid of Clients who have developed addictions as a result of painful traumatic events that have consequentially led to debilitating cases of PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder). As part of our empathic and trust-based philosophy of drug and alcohol addiction treatment — one built off of the core values of our S4 Model (Safe, Sober, Supported and Supervised) — we do not just treat the addiction itself, but rather, we view it as a likely symptom that developed in the aftermath of attempting to cope with the intense onrush of emotions that comes from reliving the feelings that are associated with the traumatic event. By providing a safe environment and the empathy and expertise of our team of supportive therapists and counselors, North Bay  offers a safe haven in which Clients can confront and overcome their PTSD while receiving on-point and individualized treatment for their drug and alcohol addiction.

Oftentimes, as part of a Client's Individualized Treatment Plan that is developed for those suffering from PTSD, we will recommend EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) as a way to lessen the severity of the emotions associated with the earlier major trauma that may have led to addiction. EMDR Therapy functions by encouraging the client to consciously return to the past traumatic event in their mind while in the present day and while in the company of one of North Bay Recovery Center's trained and licensed EMDR therapists. By asking our clients focused questions about that period of their life, we help them recapture the feelings of these times and to analyze and reprocess them while in the safe and supportive environments we provide at MountainView.

By combining the memory with the placidity and repetition of this external factor, the brain then reprocesses the exact memory to be associated with the calmness, safety and security of the present rather than the painful emotions felt when the event occurred. By analyzing the feelings of the past and re-associating these events in the present, we help our clients understand why these events affected them as they did, while helping them develop the tools to overcome the traumatic event's power over them.

While we are enthusiastic advocates of the benefits of EMDR, we understand that it is not the only path to helping our Clients overcome the crushing weights of PTSD and drug and alcohol addiction. Depending on the best fit for each Client, we may also recommend a combination of traditional one-on-one talk therapy, group therapy sessions or grief counseling, among other therapeutic protocols. By integrating all of these modes of therapy together to create the best drug and alcohol addiction treatment plan for each specific client, we provide a safe, secure and endlessly compassionate environment for them to deal with their painful traumas, conquer their resultant addictions and overcome the grip both once maintained on their lives.
